Match the Pre-Infusion Soak to Light or Dark Roasts

Lighter roasts get a longer pump-driven wetting, while darker roasts do better with a passive rest.

Think of espresso as forcing hot water through a tightly packed disc of finely ground coffee, called the puck.

If full brewing pressure hits that dry disc all at once, water does not soak through evenly. Control over the shot suffers.

Pre-infusion fixes that with patience. It wets the puck first at controlled, lower pressure before ramping up to full brewing pressure.

That gentle start gives the brewer more say over how water moves through the puck, and therefore over extraction.

On this machine, both kinds of soak can be programmed.

In active pre-infusion, the pump itself delivers water at that lower pressure. Lighter roasts often benefit from a longer active soak.

Passive pre-infusion is the quieter cousin. The wetted grounds rest under trapped pressure, rather than being driven by the pump.

Darker roasts do well with that passive rest. Few machines in this price range offer both approaches together.

The soak can be matched to the coffee in the basket, light or dark, instead of using the same blast for everything.

Questions people ask

What is the difference between a light roast and a dark roast?

A light roast is coffee roasted for less time, so the beans stay denser and lighter in color. A dark roast is roasted longer, making beans darker, oilier, and more porous, with more bitter and roasty flavors.

What does dual boiler mean?

In a dual-boiler machine, one small boiler makes brewing water and a second makes steam. That allows someone to pull an espresso shot and steam milk at the same time, with separate temperature control for each job.

What does programmable pre-infusion mean in practice?

It means the length and style of the low-pressure wetting can be set in advance and repeated. Once programmed, the machine runs the same soak every time, which makes shots more consistent from day to day.
