Matter Is Ripples in Invisible Fields

Empty space is full of fields, and a ripple in one becomes an electron, or you.

Look up on a clear night and the space between the stars looks like nothing. According to quantum field theory, that nothing is actually full.

The theory says invisible quantum fields fill the entire universe. Dakotah Tyler, an astrophysicist speaking with former NFL running back Arian Foster, offered it as a picture to imagine, suggesting the fields were kind of like a field of invisible strings.

Tyler said matter appears when those fields are excited, with the ripple manifesting as something we would call matter. An electron, for example, is an excitation of the electromagnetic field.

That includes you. Tyler said "we would be manifestations of those quantum fields," which in a real way makes us "the universe experiencing itself." Tyler called that a "grounded scientific take."

Tyler said this picture is "not crazy" and that it is "just modern quantum field theory."

Questions people ask

What does “excited” mean for a field?

It means the field has extra energy in one place. A calm field is the vacuum, with no particles present, while a ripple with the right amount of energy appears as a particle. Different amounts and kinds of ripples show up as different particles.

If I am just fields, why do I feel solid?

Solidity comes from forces and repulsion between particles, not from hardness at the smallest scale. Electrons repel each other through electromagnetism, and quantum rules prevent atoms from collapsing or overlapping easily. Your hand feels a table as solid because those field ripples push back.

How many quantum fields are there?

In the standard picture taught today, there is one field for each fundamental particle type, including electrons, quarks, and photons. They all overlap in the same space. What we call empty space is all of them sitting quietly together.
