Musk Warns Of An Empathy Exploit Tied To Civilizational Suicide

Historian Quinn Slobodian reads Musk as treating politics as a coding problem where compromise looks like contamination.

In a clip from his conversation with Joe Rogan, Elon Musk, the businessman behind X, SpaceX, and Tesla, turns to what he calls a weak point in Western civilization.

Speaking with Rogan, Musk warns of “civilizational suicidal empathy” and says, “The fundamental weakness of Western civilization is empathy. The empathy exploit.”

Musk says he believes in empathy and that people should care about others, but argues it must be thought through. The problem, in his account, is automatic response that others can exploit. Rogan replies that empathy should not let others take control of the state and run it badly without being removed.

Musk added that people should not be, in his words, “programmed like a robot.”

When Musk speaks of suicide, historian Quinn Slobodian argues, he means something concrete.

The reference is to liberal decisions to admit large numbers of refugees and immigrants from very different backgrounds into the United States and Europe. Slobodian ties that claim to arguments common on the European far right and to Musk’s calls for what he terms re-migration, meaning large scale return of immigrants to their countries of origin.

Musk’s defense is that sympathy for individuals has led Western countries to admit newcomers who do not share its core values.

At a deeper level, Slobodian reads Musk as going further. Slobodian says Musk would see ideas developed over 250 years, including democracy, popular sovereignty, and the view of citizens as roughly equal, as part of that contamination.

Running society then becomes a programming task in that reading. Efforts to change the basic rules are not seen as chances for agreement or compromise, but as intrusions to be removed by rewriting the code.

Questions people ask

What does Musk mean by calling empathy an exploit or a bug?

In software, an exploit takes advantage of a flaw in a program to make it behave in ways its designers did not intend. Musk uses the term to argue that appeals to compassion can be used to pressure Western societies into policies, especially on immigration, that he believes harm them as a whole.

What is re-migration?

Slobodian uses it to mean large scale efforts to send immigrants back to their countries of origin. The term has circulated in European far right debates about reversing immigration, and it goes beyond deporting people who entered unlawfully.

Does Musk say empathy is always bad?

No. In the exchange, Musk says empathy is good and people should care about others, but that it needs to be weighed against consequences for civilization. Slobodian’s point is that Musk distrusts reflexive empathy and democratic compromise built upon it.
