One company in Atlanta is using robot dogs to do security at apartment complexes.

The deployment points to artificial intelligence moving beyond computers and into physical places like apartment complexes, alongside driverless cars and delivery drones.

Kashmir Hill, who covers technology for The Times, points to driverless cars operating in San Francisco and other cities, and Amazon using drones for deliveries in Texas, as signs robots are showing up more often around the country.

A separate example shows the technology still needs help. In San Francisco, a startup posting offered pay for people to walk robo-dogs, with no experience necessary. A man spotted doing the work was making $20 an hour. The company wanted walking data because the machines still cannot find their way around urban areas by themselves.

Questions people ask

What can a robot security dog actually do?

Mostly they act as mobile cameras and deterrents. They can patrol a set route, stream video, and carry lights, speakers, and sensors, but they still depend on human operators to respond to anything they see.

Are driverless cars really operating in multiple cities?

Yes, in limited areas. Companies such as Waymo and Zoox operate paid driverless rides in San Francisco, Los Angeles, Phoenix, Austin, and several other cities, although the service still covers only parts of those metro areas.

Are robot dogs replacing human security guards?

For now they are helpers, not replacements. A robot can cover repetitive night patrols and record everything it sees, but people are still needed to handle confrontations, make judgments, and maintain the machines.
