Megan, a horror podcast host who covers genre films, was sitting in a festival screening of the new Australian horror movie Penny Lane Is Dead when she noticed an awkward quiet. The film seemed to reach for a laugh, and at least a few times a joke seemed to fall flat.

Her take, after sitting with the film for a couple of days and reading other reviews, is that the tone does not quite hold. "There are attempts maybe to break the tension with certain jokes at certain times, but also I could feel in the screening there were at least a few times that I think there was meant to be a laugh and they did not get one," she said.

What she means is that the movie plays, on paper, as a horror dark comedy, but the brutality sometimes pulls viewers out of the humor. It belongs to a rough Australian tradition, sometimes called Ozploitation, of low budget, gritty, and deliberately unhinged genre films. Megan argues Australian horror tends toward bleak, unruly humor, and this one leans all the way in.

The cast commits, especially Ben O'Toole, an actor playing Angus, and Sophia Wright Mendelsohn, an actor playing the chaotic cousin Kat who helps drive the story, and the makeup and gore effects are excellent throughout. Yet as a gritty, action packed revenge film with a lot of rough stuff happening to its characters, Megan argues the difficult balance between horror and humor was not fully respected.

Megan says she understands why reactions are mixed. She does not think revenge movies built around assault suit every viewer because they are very rough, and she has seen reviews where people were very bothered by this one. In her view, viewers should know what they are walking into with Australian horror.

Her warning is blunt: "It's an Australian horror movie. I feel like you should know what you're walking into."

Questions people ask

What does Ozploitation mean?

It is a loose label for blunt, low budget Australian genre films that prize grit, gore, and dark humor over polish. Think extreme violence, practical effects, and jokes that are more unhinged than light. Penny Lane Is Dead fits because it is gory, confrontational, and played with a straight face even when it is trying to be funny.

What is Penny Lane Is Dead actually about?

It is set during a summer in 1986, where three friends gather at a beach house and a prank goes badly wrong. The situation escalates into a home invasion and then a revenge story. The performances, especially the unhinged cousin character, carry much of the chaos.

Why does a festival screening reaction matter?

Fantasia is an annual genre film festival that focuses on horror, fantasy, action, and cult movies, and it often hosts premieres. Films that play there are usually still seeking wider release. Strong audience reactions, good or bad, can shape early buzz.
