Science Is a Window Into God

After 14 months on a blood thinner, her son's clot disappeared on the day of his heart procedure.

The St. Bernadette Parish, Westlake Podcast · Sara Kronholz's Story

Sara Kronholz, a mother from Ohio, was laughing with relief in the hospital after the surgeon came out around noon on October 22, 2025, and said there was nothing left to do. A clot that had been visible a week earlier inside her son Anthony's heart pathway was gone, so the team closed up without further treatment.

The surgeon was joyful, Kronholz recalled, and suggested that maybe the blood thinner had finally worked after 14 months. She answered that possibility with an idea she returns to often. “Science is simply a window into God,” she said.

What she meant, she explained, was that the prayers and the timing of the drug came together that day. The clot had not cleared after 14 months on the blood thinner, which is why its disappearance at the hour of the procedure mattered to her. Anthony had been anointed before the procedure, and she and her husband Brandon had put their hands on his chest and prayed over the clot the night they learned about it, at the encouragement of their pastor, Father Andrew. People had been praying for Anthony all his life, including for the clot to disappear.

To Kronholz, all those prayers and requests were gathered up that day. She pictures them as placed in the offering at Mass and lifted up, with God allowing the healing to happen. In that view, a late success for the drug would not undercut the miracle.

She puts the choice directly. As she argues it, people could treat the outcome as only medicine, or they could see medical knowledge itself as a blessing from God that brought about the healing. She credited Anthony's doctors, and said God had given the family access to the care he needs.

She ends where she began, with gratitude rather than proof. Any good thing that has happened to Anthony, she believes, including what she calls his many miracles, comes from God's kindness.

Questions people ask

What does it mean that Anthony was anointed before the procedure?

In Catholic practice, anointing of the sick is a sacrament in which a priest prays for and anoints a seriously ill person with blessed oil. Families often request it before surgery as a prayer for strength, healing, and peace, not only as a last rite.

Why would a child stay on a blood thinner for 14 months?

Blood thinners do not always dissolve an existing clot quickly. Children with complex heart repairs often stay on them for many months to prevent the clot from growing or breaking off while doctors watch whether the body will slowly clear it.
