The best AI founders win like StarCraft players, commanding many pieces at once
Winning is less about one brilliant move and more about directing many AI helpers at once.

digitalnative.tech · The Post-Agentic FounderIn an essay from Daybreak, the firm describes who is most likely to succeed as artificial intelligence improves. The author, Jared Newman, calls them post-agentic founders, meaning founders who become disproportionately more capable as the models themselves get better.
After arguing that the old path of mastering one discipline was giving way to building AI systems that solve problems, Newman reached for games to explain the difference. As he put it, "The best chess and StarCraft players don’t win with a single move or unit." StarCraft is a fast strategy video game in which a player directs many units at once, gathering supplies, scouting, and attacking in overlapping battles.
"They win by maintaining a model of the entire board, allocating scarce resources, sequencing actions, and directing many pieces toward a unified objective," he wrote.
Newman argues that, in his words, "Post-agentic founders do the same" with AI agents, the software helpers that can write code, do research, or carry out tasks. He says they are unusually good at breaking a large problem into parts, handing those parts to different agents, deciding which jobs should run at the same time, and knowing when to step in themselves. The job, in other words, is coordinating many agents toward one goal.
That work matters even more as the helpers grow stronger, Newman argues, because, as he puts it, better models "can reason, write, and execute only within the frame they’ve been given." In his telling, what will matter more and more is knowing which capabilities to use on which important problems, and building teams and systems that get stronger alongside the models.
Questions people ask
What exactly is an AI agent?
An AI agent is software built on a large AI model that can carry out multistep work on its own, such as writing code, searching files, booking actions, or using other tools. A founder might give one agent the job of testing a feature, another the job of summarizing customer calls, and a third the job of drafting documents.
What is StarCraft and why compare it to running a startup?
StarCraft is a competitive video game first released in 1998 in which each player builds bases, collects resources, and directs armies in real time. Top players are famous for managing dozens of actions per minute across different parts of the map, which is why it is often used as an example of managing complexity under pressure.
Does this mean expertise no longer matters?
Specialists still matter for hard science and for training better models. Newman's point is about a different job, the founder who turns models into products, where the edge comes from knowing which problems to give to which agents, and spotting when the agents are solving the wrong problem.
