The Best Factory Hand Varied More Than the Rest

His joints varied more even as his finished pieces varied less.

In a Soviet factory, one worker stood out. While the average hand finished 150 perfect pieces in an hour, his hands finished 200, and the pieces were more perfect, not just more numerous.

Managers wanted more of whatever he had. They brought in Bernstein, the Soviet scientist known as the father of biomechanics and motion capture, to study him, according to movement teacher Ido Portal.

Bernstein fastened small globes to the arm and filmed the work with a dated camera to record how he moved and examine the mechanics. The hope was familiar: find the single best motion, and teach it to everyone else.

What turned up was the opposite. In Portal's telling, a legendary story that might be true, the job was like work with a hammer, repeated again and again. The star worker showed more variety in the trajectories of the various joints, while the end result showed less variety. It was more perfect.

That swap is the core of the story. There was more variety in the joints and less variety in the result. The best hands did not repeat one fixed path, yet the finished pieces came out steadier.

Portal calls the larger lesson "meta movement," his name for a way of moving that still succeeds when conditions change. He contrasts a boxer's jab with a punch practiced only in the air. The boxer learns the jab from the first day while someone interrupts it, as an opponent parries it, moves, or makes him miss.

Portal connects the same demand to skateboarders. A skateboarder faces a fresh scenario every time and must adapt the movement instead of repeating a perfected move, and still land the end point.

Questions people ask

Who was Bernstein?

Nikolai Bernstein was a Soviet scientist in the mid 1900s who studied how people control movement. He developed early methods for tracking motion and showed that the nervous system solves the same task in many different ways, a problem now called motor redundancy.

What does Portal mean by meta movement?

In Portal's telling, it is a skill that still works when conditions change. A boxer's jab counts because it was built while opponents blocked it and forced misses. A punch practiced only in clean air can look sharper but fail when something interferes.
