The Word of the Year Began as a Trick for Building Better Game Characters
Around fifty years after tabletop players used min-maxing, TikTok made maxing shorthand for optimizing everything from sleep to looks.

Global News Podcast · Israel holds first election since October 7th attacksDictionary.com has named maxing its word of the year for 2026, joining recent winners such as demure, hallucinate, and 6-7, a slang term. The term attaches to almost any activity or trait to mean it has been pushed to its fullest, with users coining versions for appearance, rest, and even Catholic-maxing. U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has taken up lethality-maxing to present the Pentagon as centered on killing.
The history is much older than the hype. Adam Oleksik, a linguist and author, says "The word maxing has been around since at least the 1970s in tabletop role-playing games, the idea of min-maxing your character for a certain stat." In those games, players build fictional characters by assigning scores to different traits. The trick was called min-maxing, or minimizing some scores in order to push one favored stat as high as possible.
That logic carried over into video game culture, where players also tune characters for maximum performance. Then, on the message board 4chan, the idea was extended from fictional characters to the self, treating a person as a character whose own stats could be maximized.
The current boom came later, through social media. Oleksik says the modern usage was popularized on TikTok, particularly in 2022 and 2023, when the word hit the mainstream.
Oleksik cautions that word of the year is "primarily a marketing event to sell more dictionaries." But he says maxing works as a suffix that is applied to many new words, adding "it does seem to have the potential to stick around." He says dictionary recognition does not change how people use it, but it reflects a broader cultural trend toward optimization and maximizing.
Questions people ask
What does min-maxing actually mean?
Min-maxing means lowering the scores, traits, or costs you care about least in order to raise the one you care about most. In a game, that might mean accepting a weak charisma score to get maximum strength, and in everyday talk it has become shorthand for ruthless tradeoffs in pursuit of one goal.
What do people mean by looks-maxing and sleep-maxing?
Looks-maxing means trying to maximize physical attractiveness, often through grooming, fitness, style, or cosmetic procedures. Sleep-maxing means trying to maximize sleep quality and quantity, often with strict routines, supplements, or sleep-tracking gadgets.
Is Dictionary.com the only dictionary that picks a word of the year?
Dictionary.com and Merriam-Webster, which is associated with Encyclopaedia Britannica, are separate American dictionary publishers, and each now runs its own annual word-of-the-year publicity. Collins and Oxford University Press run the best-known British equivalents, while other organizations choose words tied to specific themes.
