Tyler Cowen, who teaches at George Mason, says someone studied lawsuit filings and found a significant percentage were written by Claude, an AI model. Cowen did not give details of the study, so this is his account of it.

He says suing used to take a lot of time and trouble. Now, in his telling, a person can speak with the AI for about an hour and ask it to write up the filing.

Cowen also says the number of lawsuits is rising rapidly. He warns that this ease of filing will break the legal system, and he expects a rough stretch before courts catch up.

Questions people ask

Can AI make mistakes in legal filings?

Yes. AI models can invent cases, quotes, or citations that sound real but are false. That is why lawyers who use AI are still expected to check every fact and citation before they sign and file.
