Ukraine's Army Runs on One Private Satellite Network Europe Cannot Replace
A recent slowdown exposed a military dependence that leaves front-line defense tied to an American company.

Bloomberg Daybreak: US Edition · Starlink Ukraine Controversy; SpaceX and Tesla Study MergerA few weeks ago, Ukrainian officials said publicly that their battlefield internet had been reduced, or constrained in some way. For most armies that would be an inconvenience. For Ukraine, it was a threat to its main lifeline.
That lifeline is Starlink, a network of thousands of satellites that beams internet connections to small dishes on the ground. Ukrainian units use it to communicate along the front lines and to help shoot incoming weapons out of the sky. When the signal slows, the ability to see, share information, and defend both soldiers and cities slows with it.
There is still dispute over why the slowdown happened. The Trump administration said it was not responsible, and Elon Musk, the businessman who controls Starlink, said he had not given the order. The Wall Street Journal, citing several sources, reported that Musk did order it, with some sources saying he acted on his own. According to one source's account cited in that reporting, the move potentially followed a prior conversation with senior officials in the Trump administration, and potentially with President Trump himself.
The reason the episode alarmed Kyiv is plain. Reporter Oliver Crook, who covers Europe, says officials he has spoken with in recent weeks point to the large financial burden the Europeans have taken up, but note that Europe lacks advanced air defenses comparable to Patriot, which is designed to intercept missiles in flight. The point he says he takes from all of them on Starlink is that Ukraine is fundamentally dependent, with no European system able to take its place.
That leaves Ukraine dependent on decisions made in Washington and in one American company. When asked whether European leaders worry about their own Starlink access, Crook said he did not know that concern existed quite yet at that level. He also reports that Ukrainians are intensely nervous about French politics, where street protests have added to the chaos and where Marine Le Pen, the nationalist leader who favors withdrawing support from Ukraine, is a leading contender. France and Germany are the two major pillars still holding up Ukraine, and Kyiv fears what happens if one wavers.
Questions people ask
What exactly is Starlink?
Starlink is a network of several thousand small satellites in low orbit, operated by SpaceX. They relay internet signals to portable ground terminals, so soldiers, hospitals, and towns can get online without cell towers or buried cables.
Why does internet access matter for fighting a war?
Ukraine uses the connection to coordinate artillery, drones, and air defenses, and to share warnings about incoming attacks. Without fast, reliable communications, units cannot track targets or tell missile batteries what to shoot down.
What is the Patriot system?
The Patriot is a ground-based air defense system that uses radar and interceptor missiles to destroy incoming missiles and aircraft. Europe has no equivalent system, so Ukraine depends on the United States for Patriots.
