Waking Up in the Middle of the Night Is Normal
Even self-described eight-hour sleepers cannot do it every night, and sleep studies rarely find anyone who sleeps straight through.

Something You Should Know · Stop Trying So Hard to Sleep & Why New Things Are So Hard to ResistIf you woke up at 3 a.m., you slept like everyone else. On sleep studies, it is very rare to find someone who does not wake in the night, says Stephanie Romiszewski, a sleep physiologist.
We are taught to expect one solid block, but waking up, remembering it and drifting off again, or sometimes lying awake because of hormones, age, or life changes, is normal, she says.
Even a genuine eight-hour sleeper cannot sleep eight hours every night, and sleep at 25 will not look the same at 55. That flexibility is the point, Romiszewski says, because it lets the body adjust for jet lag, clock changes, and sickness.
So a broken night is not a failed night. Good sleep, in her definition, belongs to the person who does not think much about it, and does not worry when a bad night happens.
Questions people ask
If waking up is normal, when should I worry about my sleep?
Frequency and daytime function matter more than any single wake-up. Doctors generally become concerned when trouble falling or staying asleep happens three or more nights a week for months and leaves you tired, cranky, or impaired during the day. A brief awakening with quick return to sleep is not in that category.
What should I do when I wake up at night?
Sleep experts usually advise keeping things quiet, dark, and boring. Avoid checking the clock, your phone, or email, and if you are wide awake and getting frustrated after about 20 minutes, get up for a calm activity in dim light until you feel sleepy again.
Do I really need eight hours?
No single number fits everyone. Most adults do best with seven to nine hours, but genes, age, and health shift the need, and some healthy people naturally sleep six hours while others need nine. How you feel and function during the day is a better guide than hitting eight exactly.
