The vast majority of transportation in New York City happens at a much lower price. Growing from 200 million monthly users to 500 million, and from people using Uber six times a month on average to 25, means the average cost of a transaction has to come down.
One route is more modes. Trains can be booked on Uber in London, along with bikes and scooters. Once car ownership is taken apart, a person's transportation covers far more than one car type, and each cheaper mode lowers the average price of a trip.
Why do subway rides cost so much less than car rides?
A single subway train can carry more than a thousand riders at once, while a car with a driver carries up to four. The cost of track, trains, and staff is spread across everyone aboard. Cities also fund transit partly through tax revenue alongside fares. The New York City subway opened in 1904.
How do apps bundle trains, bikes, and cars together?
Helsinki's Whim app, launched in 2016 by MaaS Global, combined public transit, taxis, rental cars, and city bikes in one app with subscription plans. The model is called Mobility as a Service. Its goal is to let a traveler plan, book, and pay for different modes in a single place.
