She took the news to her previous investors and to the ones she was talking with about the upcoming round. They told her the revenue wasn't enough and the economics of the contract weren't strong, and she called her investor in tears.

The company had two years of runway in the bank. A first customer is an acknowledgment that someone wants what the founder built, and it sits one step from a second customer and a fourth customer, and from a product that is repeatable, with lines of code that will work in the founder's absence.

How do small first contracts become big accounts?

Enterprise software sellers popularized a strategy called land and expand, where a company wins a small first deal and grows it over time. The first contract gets the product into the customer's systems and builds trust with the people who use it. Later purchases are easier to make because the buyer has already seen it work. Many large software accounts began as a pilot with a single team.

Why do investors scrutinize early contract economics?

Investors look at whether revenue comes with heavy costs, such as custom work or one-off support. A contract that needs a lot of hands-on effort can resemble consulting more than software. Software costs very little to serve one more customer once it is built, which is the reason investors favor repeatable products. Gross margin, the share of revenue left after the direct costs of delivery, is a common measure of that.
