Amazon cargo jet kills five in Miami
The plane had two people aboard, a pilot and a co-pilot, and both survived. It crashed into a van carrying workers for a cleaning company contracted to the airlines and into an SUV that had been on a public road.
Federal investigators do not yet know the cause. They plan to review the aircraft's various systems and flight controls. Thousands of passengers traveling over the Labor Day weekend had their flights delayed or canceled because of the crash.
How do investigators find a crash's cause?
In the United States, the National Transportation Safety Board leads investigations of civil aviation accidents. Investigators recover the flight data recorder and the cockpit voice recorder, which capture the aircraft's systems and controls and the conversation in the cockpit. They also examine the wreckage, maintenance records, and weather. The board typically issues a preliminary report within about a month, and final reports often take a year or two.
Why does one accident disrupt a whole holiday weekend?
Airlines schedule planes and crews in tight loops, so one aircraft and one crew may fly several flights in a day. When an airport closes a runway, late arrivals leave planes and crews out of position for the flights that follow. Investigators also need the accident site left intact until they have documented it. A closure that lasts a few hours can therefore affect schedules at other airports for days.
