Christopher Nolan pours himself into every movie as if it will be the best film ever made, knowing it probably won't be. Films are really hard to make and all consuming. Filming is arduous, puts a lot of strain on his family and personal relationships, and takes a lot of physical strength. Life energy is the only finite resource there is, and the movie has to be worth spending it on.

It had never occurred to him that anyone making films would try for less. When fans online turn out to be obsessed with Inception or Memento, that doesn't strike him as strange, because he was genuinely obsessed with both for years.

When a film reaches someone that way, he gets a huge thrill. It means he has wrapped them up in it the way he tries to wrap himself up in it.

Why do some films inspire obsessive fans?

Films that invite repeat viewing tend to build devoted followings. An ambiguous ending leaves questions open, which gives fans something to argue over long after the credits. Inception closes on a spinning top cut to black, leaving it unclear whether the lead character is dreaming. Fans have debated that last shot since the film's release in 2010.

Why do film shoots strain the people on them?

Feature shoots run for weeks or months, often with long days and travel away from home. In the United States, union agreements for film crews set minimum rest periods between workdays. Those rules were pushed forward by a campaign known as Brent's Rule, named for assistant camera operator Brent Hershman, who died in a car crash in 1997 after a 19-hour workday. Rest-period rules are now part of standard crew contracts.
