Nolan had been hooked since seeing Star Wars at seven, the year it was released in 1977. He read a magazine about Industrial Light and Magic obsessively, and anything about how those films were made fascinated him. At eight, his father gave him a Super 8 camera, which recorded for about two and a half minutes at a time, probably in black and white and without sound.

He knew he liked making films but not what the job was. Blade Runner and Alien had different stories, writers, and actors, and everything else a kid thinks makes a film what it is. One connection ran through both, and it was the director.

How did a Super 8 camera work?

Kodak introduced the Super 8 format in 1965 with film sealed in a cartridge that loaded in daylight. A standard 50-foot cartridge ran about three minutes at 18 frames per second and about two and a half minutes at 24. The cartridge had to be sent to a lab for processing before anything could be watched. The format's ease of use made it a common starting point for young filmmakers.

Why did Star Wars need a new effects company?

George Lucas founded Industrial Light and Magic in 1975 because no existing studio effects department could deliver what Star Wars required. The company built a motion-control camera, called the Dykstraflex, after visual effects supervisor John Dykstra. It could repeat the same camera move exactly, so several passes of the model spaceships could be combined into one shot. The system was developed for Star Wars, released in 1977.

Why does a director's style carry across films?

A director shapes casting, lighting, set design, and pacing, so the same sensibility appears across different stories. Ridley Scott studied at the Royal College of Art and worked as a set designer at the BBC before directing. Alien in 1979 and Blade Runner in 1982 share dense, lived-in settings despite different writers and casts. Both films are still studied for their production design.
