AI stocks recovered some overnight, partly because Nvidia's Jensen Huang defended CoreWeave. He said he thinks the company will be profitable in the longer run. The questions over how its debt will be financed have not gone away.

In Asian markets there was some recovery overnight, but markets are nowhere near where they stood before the sell-off. South Korea's Kospi, which relies heavily on two chip makers, Samsung and SK Hynix, has had its worst week since 2008.

Why do AI data center companies borrow so heavily?

Data centers need huge amounts of equipment up front, above all graphics chips that cost tens of thousands of dollars each. The revenue arrives gradually as customers pay over multi-year contracts. Companies in this position often borrow against the chips and the contracts to pay for the build-out. The model works while demand stays strong and interest payments are covered, and it becomes strained when either falls short.

Why can one stock sink a whole sector?

Investors often treat a single company as a bellwether, a signal for the health of its entire industry. When CoreWeave drops, traders sell other AI-linked stocks that share the same drivers, such as demand for Nvidia chips and spending on data centers. Funds that hold many AI names sell together, which spreads the decline. Economists call this spread of losses contagion.

Why does South Korea's Kospi swing with two chip makers?

The Kospi is weighted by company size, and Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix are among the biggest firms in South Korea. Both make memory chips, and AI data centers use large quantities of a fast type called high-bandwidth memory. A shift in AI sentiment therefore moves their shares, and their weight moves the whole index. South Korea's market is more exposed to the chip cycle than most large markets.
