Dreams can be aimed at problems

How dream incubation works

People try it by priming themselves throughout the day to dream about one topic. Some researchers think the dreaming mind can work out creative and mental blocks, and people have shown that solutions to waking-life problems can turn up in dreams.

Famous dream ideas

Paul McCartney dreamed both Yesterday and Let It Be. Billy Joel's River of Dreams came to him in a dream, and Mary Shelley dreamed up Frankenstein. Aphex Twin is a hardcore lucid dreamer who has made bunches of songs by going to sleep on purpose and working out the music inside the dream.

One reading of these cases is that the idea was already in the dreamer's head, and the dream state let them think about it in ways waking life doesn't allow.

How did Yesterday come to McCartney?

McCartney has said he woke in 1965 at his girlfriend's family home on Wimpole Street in London with the melody fully formed in his head. He went straight to a piano and played it out, then spent weeks asking people whether they had heard it before, fearing he had remembered another composer's tune. While he worked on the words, he used the placeholder lyrics Scrambled Eggs. The finished song was released in 1965.

How did Mary Shelley dream up Frankenstein?

In June 1816, Shelley was staying near Lake Geneva with Lord Byron, who challenged the group to write ghost stories. She struggled for days to come up with one. According to her own 1831 introduction, she then lay awake and saw in her mind a pale student kneeling beside the creature he had assembled. The novel was published anonymously in 1818.

How does sleep help solve problems?

In a 2004 study in Nature, Ullrich Wagner and colleagues at the University of Lübeck gave volunteers a number task with a hidden shortcut. Those who slept for a night after training were more than twice as likely to find the shortcut as those who stayed awake. The study reported roughly 59 percent for the sleepers against 23 percent for the others.
