From survival mode to creative mode
Survival and creative modes
In Minecraft's survival mode, you grow food and stay safe from the monsters at night. Creative mode gives you every resource, and if you want something to happen, it happens. The only question left is what you want to make.
Self-expression
Self-expression and creativity may be the most human things there are: having something you want to happen in the world and being able to go do it. A tool that gives everybody the power to make what they want to make serves that.
Why Cognition exists
That is the idea behind Cognition. Its founders are programmers who spent 20 years making little things for the world, and they want everyone to have an AI that helps them make things and feel the wonder of it.
How does Minecraft creative mode work?
Minecraft launched in full in 2011 with a survival mode where players gather resources and fend off hostile mobs. Creative mode removes those limits. Players receive unlimited blocks, can fly, and cannot be harmed. It lets people build structures on a very large scale without worrying about supplies.
Why did survival needs come before creativity?
Psychologist Abraham Maslow proposed a hierarchy of needs in a 1943 paper. Physiological needs such as food and safety formed the base. Self-actualization, which includes creative expression, sat at the top. Later research has questioned how strictly the order holds, but the model remains a standard way to describe how basic needs and creativity relate.
Why does making things feel meaningful?
Psychologists Edward Deci and Richard Ryan developed self-determination theory, which names autonomy, competence, and relatedness as basic psychological needs. Creating something supplies autonomy because the maker chooses what to build, and competence because the result shows skill. Studies in this tradition link satisfaction of those needs to higher well-being. The theory has been tested across many cultures.
