Aiden's business idea

Dana White's youngest son, Aiden, flew home from college one weekend with an idea for a business and laid out the whole plan. His father liked it, but a business like that would not take up eight to ten hours of the day, so quitting school was off the table. Aiden would put in applications and get a job, because if his father died the next day, a job was what he was qualified to do.

The paving company

Aiden did exactly that and ended up working at U-Haul. His older brother is finishing a master's degree in Boston, the city where their father once worked for EJ Paving Company, a company that paves roads. Their father wants him to put in some days there, to see what hard work really is.

Heat and labor

In Las Vegas, plenty of days this summer hit 115 degrees, and construction crews worked outside through all of them. In winter the temperature drops into the 30s, and they are out there again. They do hard physical labor all day, go home, eat, go to bed, and start over the next morning.

How is a road built in layers?

A paved road is a stack of layers, each doing a different job. The bottom is compacted soil, topped by a base of crushed stone that spreads weight from traffic. Above that go one or more courses of asphalt, with a smoother surface course on top. The asphalt on a typical road is only a few inches thick.

How do paving crews handle hot asphalt?

Hot-mix asphalt is delivered to the site at roughly 300 degrees Fahrenheit, well above the boiling point of water. It is a blend of crushed stone and sand held together by a petroleum-based binder. The crew has to spread and roll it before it cools and stiffens, so the work moves at the pace of the mix. Compaction by heavy rollers is what gives the finished surface its strength.
