Leviticus reads like sanitation guidance

People lived alongside bacteria and viruses until the invention of the microscope, around the 1800s. The Bible never discusses microbes, which were unseen. The rituals in those two books still amount to best practices written down before anyone understood what a virus or a bacterium is.

One reading is that a higher intelligence influenced the authorship. Another is that the writers belonged to a recreated civilization, rebuilt after a cataclysm destroyed an earlier and far more sophisticated one. That fits structures like the pyramids and Baalbek in Lebanon, which do not make sense for the peoples credited with them, and it makes the texts oral tradition passed on through hundreds if not thousands of years before anyone wrote it down.

What do the sanitation rules in Deuteronomy say?

Deuteronomy 23 tells the Israelite camp to set a designated place outside it for waste and to carry a spade for burying it. Leviticus 13 through 15 sets out rules for isolating people with certain skin conditions and for washing after bodily discharges. Leviticus 11 also restricts which animals may be eaten. Archaeologists have found stone toilets from the First Temple period in ancient Israel.

How did germ theory take hold?

In 1847 the Hungarian physician Ignaz Semmelweis found that doctors in a Vienna maternity clinic who handled corpses before deliveries had far higher death rates among mothers than midwives' wards did. When he required handwashing with chlorinated lime, deaths in his ward fell sharply. Louis Pasteur and Robert Koch established germ theory in the 1860s through the 1880s. Koch identified the bacteria that cause tuberculosis in 1882.

How do oral traditions pass on exact text?

Brahmin priests memorized the Vedas and recited them through structured patterns of repetition and cross-checking that guarded against errors. Scholars have found that recited versions match across regions that were centuries apart. The Vedas were committed to writing only much later than they were composed. UNESCO listed Vedic chanting as a masterpiece of oral and intangible heritage in 2008.
