Lie flat to survive killer bees
Killer bees
Hearing the bees coming, a survey leader once told his students to find a bush and lie down. They asked why, and he told them to stop talking and do it. The swarm went straight over them. The low-lying bushes in the jungle are the one place the bees do not go.
Wild pigs
Wild pigs are the other danger, running in groups of 40 or 50. Their smell reaches you before the sound of their hooves, carried on the breeze. The first time a herd came through, he stood flat-footed while one charged right at him and turned, then another 30 turned after it. That was blind luck.
From then on, he warned his students at the first smell to find a tree without thorns and climb it right now.
Why are killer bees so aggressive?
Killer bees are Africanized honey bees, a hybrid of African and European bees. Brazilian geneticist Warwick Kerr brought African bees to Brazil in the 1950s, and some escaped in 1957. They spread north through the Americas and reached Texas in 1990. They defend the colony in larger numbers and chase threats farther than European bees.
How do peccary herds travel?
White-lipped peccaries live in Belize and Guatemala and travel in herds of dozens to hundreds. They are related to pigs but belong to a separate family. A scent gland on their back gives off a strong musk. They clack their teeth when alarmed.
