Nail the basics before supplements
The benchmarks
Arguments over carnivore, paleo, and vegan nuances matter less than the exercise foundation underneath them. At 40, the clinic's benchmarks are a dead hang of a minute and a half for a woman and two minutes for a man, with a 90-degree air squat held for two minutes for both.
Farmer carries
Farmer carries are scored against body weight. A man should be able to carry his body weight, half in each hand, for two minutes, and a woman about 75% of her body weight.
The full assessment
These tests capture grip strength and mobility, and the full strength assessment runs 11 difficult tests, including vertical jump and ground contact time off a box. It took about a year to assemble from the literature and aims at the proxies for what a centenarian decathlete needs, someone living their marginal decade at their best.
Why does grip strength predict health?
The PURE study, published in The Lancet in 2015 by Darryl Leong and colleagues, measured grip strength in about 140,000 adults across 17 countries. Each 5-kilogram drop in grip strength was associated with a 16 percent higher risk of death from any cause and a 17 percent higher risk of cardiovascular death. It was a stronger predictor of cardiovascular death than systolic blood pressure.
How does the sitting-rising test predict survival?
Researchers led by Claudio Gil Araújo in Brazil scored 2,002 adults aged 51 to 80 on how many hands, knees, or other supports they needed to sit down on the floor and rise again. The results were published in the European Journal of Preventive Cardiology in 2014. Those with the lowest scores had a death risk roughly five to six times that of those with the highest scores.
