Running out of money

In New Orleans, the Oswalds were coming apart, and by that fall Lee was almost broke. Marina moved into Ruth Paine's house in Irving, and Lee stayed behind in a rented room, coming out only on weekends. By October he needed work.

A job in Dallas

Ruth made a few phone calls and helped Lee get a job as a warehouse clerk in Dallas. His first day at the depository was October 16. That same morning, he was offered a job with an airline, with better work and better pay.

The motorcade route

Kennedy's motorcade route was unknown to the public until November 19. By then Oswald had already been at the depository for over a month.

Why did the motorcade pass the depository?

The motorcade was headed to the Trade Mart, where Kennedy was due to speak at a luncheon. The route ran down Main Street through downtown, then turned onto Houston Street and Elm Street at Dealey Plaza to reach the Stemmons Freeway. The turn from Houston onto Elm brought the cars right past the depository building. Dealey Plaza was dedicated in 1940 and named for George Bannerman Dealey, publisher of the Dallas Morning News.

How did a textbook warehouse operate?

The Texas School Book Depository was a private company that stored textbooks and shipped them to schools around Texas. Clerks filled school orders by pulling cartons from shelves spread across the building's floors. The building stands at the corner of Elm and Houston streets. It now houses the Sixth Floor Museum, which opened in 1989.
