Gibberish first
Dylan Gossett hunts for a melody he likes and sings sounds that mean nothing. For about thirty minutes he noodles on guitar, not because he is trying to write a song but because he enjoys it. Eventually a word arrives that feels thought-provoking, and one line was enough to point him toward where he wanted a song about heading back to Austin to go.
Writing at night
His wife, Julia, is usually on the couch, and he looks over to check that it sounds cool. The best material comes this way, in his living room at night. He has never tried a Nashville-style writing engine, and the closest he has come is writing with his brother.
Writing with his brother
His brother Blake wrote Ramblin', the title track of the new album, in a finger-picking style he can't match. He contributed only the chorus and a bit of melody. He is open to collaboration now, though he still guards the writing, which is his passion almost more than singing.
Have famous songs begun as nonsense words?
Paul McCartney has said the melody of Yesterday came to him in a dream in 1964. While he worked on it, he sang placeholder words, with the working title Scrambled Eggs and lines about scrambled eggs and loving someone's legs. He later replaced them with the lyrics the world knows. Placeholder lyrics of this kind are known as dummy lyrics.
Why does noodling help creativity?
In a 2008 study in PLoS ONE, Charles Limb and Allen Braun scanned the brains of jazz pianists while they improvised. During improvisation, parts of the prefrontal cortex that monitor and inhibit behavior became less active. A region linked to self-expression became more active. The musicians were playing in a scanner with a small keyboard designed for use inside the machine.
How does co-writing work in Nashville?
Co-writing is standard practice in Nashville, where publishing companies schedule songwriters into sessions with one another. Hit songs commonly carry three or more writer credits. The writers split the publishing income according to shares they agree on, often in equal parts. The Nashville Songwriters Association International has represented the city's songwriters since 1967.
