Take care of your people
General Austin was one of the only four-star generals to come out of his class at West Point, and his career was storied. Early on he worried about promotions and whether he was moving up fast enough.
One day he woke up and decided to stop taking care of his career and start taking care of his people. The moment he did, everything changed, because they wouldn't let him fail.
When young people ask him for career advice, his first response is to stop asking that question and ask what they have done for someone else, how they can be useful, and how they can take care of their people.
How does the US Army think about caring for troops?
Army leadership doctrine uses the phrase mission first, people always. Officers are trained to treat the welfare of their soldiers as part of getting the mission done, not as a separate concern. Army manuals describe a leader's responsibility to soldiers' training, equipment, and families.
Why do teams cover for leaders who care?
A research effort at Google called Project Aristotle, which studied hundreds of its teams, found that psychological safety was the strongest predictor of team effectiveness. Psychological safety means members believe they can take risks without being punished. Teams with it admitted mistakes sooner and recovered from them faster.
