The overheard question

Peter Rahal could not read well as a child, and getting a C or a D in school took ten times the effort. Overhearing those conversations broke something, and in its place grew a deep drive to prove them wrong. His survival strategy for self-esteem was to decide the teachers were wrong and the system was broken, which left him contrarian toward any authority.

Anger that stays

Psychedelics and therapy never removed the resentment and anger. It is tattooed in at this point. It has to go somewhere, and company building and exercise are where it goes. Left unchanneled, it turns him into a bad person who is not happy.

Where it goes

He chooses the most painful exercise available and refuses a stroller, carrying his son instead. Physical suffering is easy, he finds: you just get really hot or really cold. Building a company supplies the emotional kind, a lot of tough conversations, with growth waiting on the other side.

How does dyslexia change the way people read?

Dyslexia is a difference in how the brain connects written letters to the sounds of speech, and it is not a sign of low intelligence. Brain imaging studies led by Sally and Bennett Shaywitz at Yale have found less activity in left-hemisphere regions that support fast word recognition. Readers with dyslexia often use other regions to compensate, which takes more effort per word.

Why are so many entrepreneurs dyslexic?

In 2007 Julie Logan of Cass Business School in London surveyed American entrepreneurs and found that about 35 percent reported dyslexia, a far higher share than in the general population. She also found that many described learning early to delegate and to rely on spoken communication. Those habits are the kind that help a founder build a team.

What does hard exercise do to mood?

A 2015 study in mice from Heidelberg University, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, found that the calming effect of running depended on the body's endocannabinoids, not only on endorphins as long believed. Endorphins are large molecules that cannot easily cross from the blood into the brain, while endocannabinoids can.
