Why veterans join

Older people bring knowledge and wisdom, but they may lack the motivation. The young founders supply the pull: they are naive enough to think anything is possible, and the technology is there to back that up, so the best ones work like a magnet.

Small mixed hubs

The teams are small hubs of two or three, with two 22-year-olds working beside someone who has 20 years of experience. The young pair knows the new ways of operating systems, and the veteran knows what two decades teach. The structure runs closer to self-organizing than to an org chart.

The AI generation

Many of the most successful of these founders spent COVID on YouTube, learning about everything. The oldest of their generation are about 25 or 26 and the youngest 18, and this year's rising college seniors are the first class to have had AI for all four years of college, and probably the first to use ChatGPT on an essay to get in.

Why do small teams work well?

In The Mythical Man-Month, published in 1975, Fred Brooks observed that communication paths multiply as people are added: a team of three has three paths, while a team of ten has 45. More paths mean more time spent coordinating instead of building. Brooks had managed development of IBM's System/360 operating system.

How did ChatGPT reach students so fast?

OpenAI released ChatGPT on November 30, 2022. A UBS analysis based on Similarweb data estimated that it reached 100 million monthly users by January 2023. At that point it was the fastest-growing consumer app on record.
