Israeli founders tell it straight
To Israeli founders, incoming missiles are an everyday type of occurrence, so they are naturally tough. They don't take any shit, they are very smart, and they are very trustworthy. Many of them worked in Unit 8200, a government unit in Israel, and somehow they know what America needs from way over there.
Doug Leone loves working with them. One is a woman who used to be a spy in Iran and now founded a cybersecurity company. She is tough as hell.
A founder like that will tell it to you straight, and you give it to them straight. The conversation is productive and not personal, it leads to an outcome and an agreement, and it takes fifteen minutes.
How did Unit 8200 shape Israel's tech industry?
Unit 8200 is the signals intelligence unit of the Israel Defense Forces, and it recruits young conscripts with strong technical skills. After service, many alumni have moved into private companies. Check Point Software, founded in 1993, was started by Gil Shwed, who served in the unit.
How did Israel build its venture industry?
Israel's government launched the Yozma program in 1993 to jump-start a domestic venture industry. It put public money into ten new venture funds and required each to partner with an experienced foreign investor. Several of those funds were later sold or spun out, and the model has been studied by other countries.
